Badgers and Huskies Skate to 2-2 Tie

Freshman Kyla Sanders' goal midway through the third period helped the No. 2 Wisconsin women's hockey team earn a 2-2 tie with St. Cloud State Friday afternoon at the National Hockey Center.

Senior Phoebe Monteleone (Pittsburgh, Pa.) scored earlier in the contest as the first-place Badgers pushed their record to 16-1-2 overall and 12-1-2 in the WCHA.

Sophomore Jessie Vetter (Cottage Grove, Wis.) stopped 18 shots for Wisconsin, which out-shot the Huskies 38-20 in the game, including 27-8 in the final two periods of regulation.

On the other end, junior Kendall Newell made 36 saves for St. Cloud State (7-9-3, 4-9-2).

Following a scoreless first period, Monteleone gave the Badgers a 1-0 lead 3:14 into the second. Sophomore Kayla Hagen (Crosslake, Minn.) intercepted a pass at the offensive blue line and sent a shot in on goal. Monteleone collected the rebound and knocked it under Newell for her fifth goal of the season.

However, St. Cloud scored twice before the end of the period to take a 2-1 lead into the second intermission. Midway through the stanza, Laura Fast capitalized on a turnover in the UW defensive zone for her sixth goal of the season. The Huskies took the lead with 14 seconds left in the period when Holly Roberts sent a shot from the point through traffic that Vetter never saw.

Sanders (Parrish, Fla.) leveled the game at two 8:46 into the third period. The freshman redirected a shot from the point by Meaghan Mikkelson (St. Albert, Alberta) past Newell. Mikkelson and captain Bobbi-Jo Slusar (Swift Current, Saskatchewan) notched assists on the power-play goal.

Both teams finished the contest 1-for-6 on the power play.
