Siow highlights third day at Janet Evans Invite

Wisconsin sophomore Yi Ting Siow posted Olympic Trial times in two events Saturday, while Carly Piper added another in the third day of competition at the Janet Evans Invitational at the McDonald's Swim Stadium.
The meet, which features 11 former U.S. Olympians, is being held on the campus of the University of Southern California this weekend. The University of Wisconsin swim club has qualified nearly 25 athletes for the USA Swimming Championships which will be held Aug. 1-5 in Irvine, Calif., to wrap up the summer club season.
'As a team we've gotten better each day, which is the plan this weekend,' UW head coach Eric Hansen said. 'We continue to improve as we head toward nationals.'
Siow (Seremban, Malaysia) scored a pair of fourth-place finishes in the meet. Her time of 2:30.70 in the 200-meter breaststroke improved on her seed time by over a full second. She also posted an Olympic Trial qualifying time in the 400-meter individual medley at 4:54.43.
Piper, who also had an Olympic Trial qualifying time in the 100 freestyle on Friday, posted her second qualifying time of the weekend with a seventh-place finish in the 200 free. She recorded a time of 2:02.68 in the event Saturday.
Current Badger junior Jackie Vavrek (West Chicago, Ill.) earned a US National qualifying time of 26.56 in the 50 free, placing sixth in the meet.
Former Badger Timothy Liebhold led the way for the UW men on Saturday, touching the wall in 4:33.00 in the 400 IM to post another national qualifying time. He placed fifth in the meet.
The Janet Evans Invitational concludes on Sunday with the 100-meter butterfly, the 100-meter backstroke, the 100-meter breaststroke, the 200-meter individual medley, and the 1500-meter freestyle. Preliminaries will begin at 11 a.m. with the finals at 7 p.m.
