Tegenkamp to Compete at World Cup
September 13, 2006 | Men's Cross Country
Former Badger Matt Tegenkamp will compete at the 10th IAAF World Cup in Athletics as the lone U.S. representative in the men's 5,000 meters. Tegenkamp will compete on Saturday at 8:20 p.m. local time in the Olympic Stadium in Athens, Greece.
Tegenkamp qualified for the U.S. National Team on the heels of his second-place finish at the USA Track & Field Championships held in June in Indianapolis. Tegenkamp, a 2005 graduate of Wisconsin, recently became the fourth-fastest American at 5,000 meters when he ran a personal best time of 13 minutes, 4.90 seconds at the DN Galan in Stockholm, Sweden in July.
The Lee's Summit, Mo., native was a seven-time All-American on the track for the Badgers and a three-time All-American in cross country. He continues to live in Madison and train under UW distance coach Jerry Schumacher.
The two-day event, held every four years, is unique since it is the only world championship where both individual nations and teams comprised of the best athletes from each continent compete against one another. The individual nations this year are the United States, Russia, France and Greece. They will be joined by Oceania (Australia and New Zealand), America, Europe, Africa and Asia. Africa took the 2002 men's title with the United States placing third.
