Schuman Receives National Recognition
September 15, 2006 | Men's Golf
UW men's golf coach Jim Schuman has been named one of the Top 50 Golf Instructors in America by Golf Range magazine. The Connecticut-based magazine, founded in 1991, is the official publication of the Golf Range Association of America (GRAA). The trade magazine, which focuses on learning and practice centers, golf courses, domes and indoor venues, recently announced its annual 2006 listing.
Schuman, who began his fourth year at Wisconsin with a win last week at the Mid-Pines Invitational in Pinehurst, N.C., was previously named the 2003 PGA Teacher of the Year by his peers in the State of Wisconsin. Schuman is a two-time winner of the Wisconsin State Open (1996 and 1999) and was the Wisconsin PGA Player of the Year in both 2001 and 2002.
As part of the Golf Range magazine's commitment to promote the teaching and training of golf as a central mission within its golf facility niche, the magazine highlights those PGA and LPGA teaching professionals who are contributing at the highest level. Steve di Costanzo, President and Founder notes, 'Our teaching group is selected much differently. We focus on instructors who work either year-round or seasonally at golf ranges, learning centers, golf domes or academies at golf complexes with a short course (Executive or Par 3). Schuman is an instructor at Vitense Golfland in Madison in addition to his coaching duties.
The criteria for the award comes from feedback from PGA sections, previous local, state and national teaching awards, and feedback from the magazine's writers around the U.S. and Canada.
