September 22, 2006 | Men's Cross Country
After a weekend off, the Wisconsin men's cross country team is back in action this Saturday at the 21st annual Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn. The race is set for 11:20 a.m. and will be run on Les Bolstad Golf Course.
Last year, Wisconsin placed second in the meet with 151 points, falling to first place BYU by 34. Then-senior Simon Bairu took the individual crown, besting runner-up Benson Chesang of Kansas by 31 seconds.
While always one of the nation's premier cross country meets, this year 's Griak will be bigger than ever with 350 schools, both high school and collegiate, and 4,000 runners expected to compete.
The Badgers will compete in the Gold Race against 36 other Division I teams, including No. 8 Arizona, No. 10 Kansas, No. 20 Arizona State, No. 26 Virginia and No. 29 Butler. Three other Big Ten teams including No. 23 Minnesota, No. 27 Iowa and No. 28 Michigan State, are set to race. The Badgers will also face in-state rival Marquette.
The Badgers head into the Griak with a No. 1 ranking in the USTFCCCA Division I Men 's Cross Country Poll.
