Eagon Named Big Ten Runner of the Week
September 27, 2006 | Men's Cross Country
Stu Eagon, a sophomore on the Wisconsin men's cross country team, has been named the Big Ten Conference Men's Runner of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday.
Competing in his first meet of the 2006 season, Eagon led all Badgers harriers at the Roy Griak Invitational with his eighth-place finish overall, covering the 8,000 meter course in 24 minutes and 37.3 seconds. The Portland, Ore., native was also the highest finisher among all other Big Ten runners at the meet.
Eagon earned All-America honors last season with his 17th place finish at the NCAA national championship and was an integral part of the Badgers' first NCAA team title since 1988.
This marks the fourth consecutive year that a Badger has won Big Ten Runner of the Week honors following the Griak. Last year, then-senior and eventual individual national champion Simon Bairu received the honor with a winning time of 23:34, more than 30 seconds faster than the second-place finisher.
This is Eagon's first career weekly honor from the conference office but the second of the season for the Badgers. Redshirt freshman Brandon Bethke was recognized Sept. 12 after his victory at the Pioneer Harrier Invitational on Sept. 9.
The Badgers are back in action Friday at the Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Ind. The meet is set to begin at 4 p.m. on the Notre Dame Golf Course.
