Wisconsin Men Remain on Top
September 27, 2006 | Men's Cross Country
The Wisconsin men's cross country team received all 15 first-place votes in the latest U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) poll released Tuesday.
The defending national champions maintained their hold on No. 1 despite having competed in only two meets this season and not running some of their top athletes. The Badgers have held the top spot in the rankings since last November.
After Wisconsin, the rest of the top 10 remains relatively unchanged since the USTFCCCA 's Sept. 12 preseason poll. Trailing Wisconsin in the current rankings are Arkansas, Colorado, Stanford, Iona, Texas, Arizona, Portland, Oklahoma State and BYU, respectively. Only BYU was left out of the preseason top 10, taking the spot vacated by Kansas.
The Big Ten Conference is represented by three other teams in the poll, with Minnesota (12th), Michigan (15th) and Ohio State (18th) also placing in the top 30. Minnesota made the biggest jump in the poll this week, rising 11 spots from No. 23 on the heels of their surprising second place finish at the Roy Griak Invitational. Michigan State, Iowa and Illinois also received votes in the poll.
The Badgers next compete Friday at the Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Ind. The meet is set to begin at 4 p.m. on the Notre Dame Golf Course.
