January 10, 2007 | Men's Tennis
Highly-regarded Canadian tennis prospect Peter Marrack has signed a national letter of intent and will join the Wisconsin men's tennis team for the 2007-08 season, UW head coach Greg Van Emburgh recently announced.
Marrack signed his letter of intent during the early signing period, choosing Wisconsin over such other top programs as Illinois, Michigan, Penn State and Arizona.
'We are extremely excited that Peter will be joining our program,' Van Emburgh said. 'I feel confident saying that we've gotten one of the top players from Canada.'
Marrack is currently rated No. 30 in the Canadian Men's National rankings as well as No. 5 in the Ontario Men's Provincial rankings. In 2005 at the age of 16, Marrack reached No. 207 in the ITF U18 junior rankings and claimed two U18 ITF Junior Doubles titles.
The native of Mississauga, Ontario has been ranked No. 1 in the Ontario Provincial rankings in every age group in both singles and doubles. Similarly, he has been ranked in the top five in the Canadian national rankings in both singles and doubles in every age group.
'Peter has a reputation as an extremely hard worker and he's a very intense competitor,' Van Emburgh added. 'We're confident that with those qualities he will add a tremendous amount to our program. We look forward for him joining our program in the fall.'
Baumann to Join Team for Spring Semester
Also adding to the international flavor of the UW men's tennis team, German import Moritz Baumann will join the team for the spring 2007 semester.
A native of Inzlingen, Germany, Baumann has been ranked in the top 20 in Germany in both the U16 and U18 divisions. He reached a ranking of 339 in the ITF junior rankings and won both the singles and doubles tournaments in Leuggern, Switzerland in 2004.
Baumann, a three-time doubles semifinalist at the under-16 and under-18 German Championships, won the Baden Junior Championships in 2003.
'Moritz is one of the top international recruits in the nation,' Van Emburgh said. 'We are really looking forward to him making an immediate contribution at the top of our lineup this spring.'
Baumann will be the fourth member of the 2007 UW men's tennis team to hail from outside the United States. Junior Felipe Bellido is from Lima, Peru; sophomore Gian Hodgson is from Savaneta, Aruba; and senior Lachezar Kasarov is from Bourgas, Bulgaria.
