White Beats Red 6-3 in Softball Scrimmage
October 13, 2007 | Softball
Behind a pair of three-run innings, the White team defeated the Red team 6-3 Saturday morning at the Goodman Softball Complex in the Red-White softball scrimmage.
After scoreless first inning, White got on the board in the top of the second. Junior Alexis Garcia (North Hollywood, Calif.) led things off with a walk. Freshman Ashley Hanewich (Bradenton, Fla.) followed with a double. Following a groundout, freshman Jennifer Krueger (Portage, Wis.) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Fellow freshman Kristyn Hansen (Franksville, Wis.) then drove in the game's first run with a groundout to second. Senior Joey Daniels (Oakley, Calif.) laced an RBI single to drive in the second run. Following a walk to freshman Livi Abney (Lawrence, Kan.), senior Katie Hnatyk (London, Ontario) drove in the final run of the inning with an RBI single.
The game remained 3-0 until the bottom of the sixth inning when Red knocked across a run. With two outs and senior Lynn Anderson (Neenah, Wis.) on second base, junior Leah Vanevenhoven (Kaukauna, Wis.) hit a ball to shortstop. Krueger, whose momentum was going towards third base, had to go back for the ball and ended up booting it across the infield to allow the runner to score.
Things got interesting in the seventh inning. Leading 3-1, White tacked on three more runs. Back-to-back doubles by sophomore Letty Olivarez (Newark, Calif.) and Abney to lead off the inning gave White a 4-1 lead. Hnatyk then followed with a triple to add another run. Garcia closed out the scoring with a sacrifice fly.
Red staged a comeback in the bottom of inning but it proved to be too little too late as they could only scratch across two runs. Sophomore Katie Soderberg (Delta, B.C.) led off the inning with a triple. Junior Theresa Boruta's (Chicago, Ill.) double drove Soderberg in to cut the lead to 6-2. Anderson then drove in Boruta on a fielder's choice to shortstop to make it 6-3, but that was all Red could muster as junior Nicole Whaley (Riverside, Calif.) struck out and Vanevenhoven grounded out to the pitcher to end the game.
White scored its six runs on eight hits with one error. Hnatyk led the way by going 3-4 with two RBI and a triple. Red scored three runs on seven hits and no errors. Seven different players got hits for Red.
The Wisconsin softball team will kick off its season Feb. 8-10 when they travel to Provo, Utah for the BYU Invitational at Miller Park.
