UW Puts Forth Second-Straight Second Place Finish
October 02, 2007 | Men's Golf
After being tied for first place after day one of the VCU Shootout, the UW men 's golf team was unable to hold onto their top spot, getting beaten out by Penn State in the final 18 holes today to drop to second place. Still, the Badgers can be proud of how they fared in the competitive 15-team competition in Richmond, Va., at Hermitage Country Club.
Wisconsin shot two-under par today to finish the par-72, 6955-yard course with a total score of 848 between each player's counted 54 holes. The score put the Badgers at 16-under par, three strokes behind champion Penn State.
Dan Woltman (Beaver Dam, Wis.), the tournament's defending champ from last year, finished this year as UW's top player. The junior shot one-under par today to finish the invite at five-under, good enough to place him at tied for fourth place on the individual leaderboard.
Senior Jeff Kaiser (Onalaska, Wis.) finished right on Woltman's heels, tying for seventh place with a score of four-under.
Next in line for the Badgers was Tyler Obermueller (River Falls, Wis.). The junior shot two-over on the day but was still able to finish the competition at one-under par, good enough to end up tied for 16th place.
Sophomore Jordan Elsen (Kenosha, Wis.), who was a great surprise for the Badgers yesterday by ending the day tied with Woltman at fifth place overall, was unable to maintain his momentum. The underclassmen shot four-over today to finish tied for 20th overall.
Danny Zimmerman (Verona, Wis.), UW's top scorer heading into the VCU Shootout, had a rough tournament overall. What was encouraging, however, was his ability to turn his poor first day, which ended with Zimmerman placed tied for 50th overall, all the way up to a tie for 26th place. Zimmerman shot two-under today to finish the invite at two-over.
