Wisconsin Struggles in Day One at Chambers Bay
October 21, 2007 | Men's Golf
The UW men's golf team struggled in day one of the Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge. After two rounds of competition, the Badgers find themselves at the bottom of the standings in the eight-team tournament. UW compiled a total score of 613, good for 37-over par as a team at Chambers Bay golf course in University Place, Wash.
The Badgers' poor standing was in large part due to their performance over the first 18 holes. UW shot for a score of 316 in the first round on the par-72, 7471-yard course, putting them at least 15 strokes behind every other team. Wisconsin was, however, able to bounce back in the second round, shooting a 297, tying them for the fourth best score over the second set of holes.
Playing in its first competitive action of the year, UCLA is currently positioned atop the standings with a score of 581 (five-over par), with fellow Pac-10 squad Oregon in second place at 12-over. Minnesota has been the top Big Ten team thus far, shooting a 591 (15-over) to position itself in third place.
At 21-over, Michigan State and Northwestern are locked up in a tie for fourth, while Washington (22-over) and Oregon (28-over) round out the standings.
UCLA also claims the Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge's current individual leader. At five-under par, Kevin Chappell holds a three-stroke lead over the next-best competitor.
Danny Zimmerman (Verona, Wis.) finished the day as Wisconsin's top scorer. The junior shot a 149 on Sunday, including an impressive 71 in the second round, to find himself at five-over and tied for 15th place overall.
Following Zimmerman is Jordan Elsen (Kenosha, Wis.), tied for 20th place at seven-over, and then Dan Woltman (Beaver Dam, Wis.), who stands in a tie for 39th place at 12-over.
Nick Engen (McFarland, Wis.) and Tyler Obermueller finish off UW's active roster in a tie for 45th place, one stroke behind Woltman at 13-over.
