The UW men's golf team concluded its frustrating run at the Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge on Monday, ending up with a total score of 922, 58-over par, to finish in last place in the eight-team competition. The tournament was played at the par-72, 7,471-yard Chambers Bay golf course in University Place, Wash.
UCLA claimed first place, finishing with a score of 879, good for 15-over par on the challenging course.
Michigan State used an impressive Monday, to finish the invite in second place at 21-over. The Spartans shot at even-par, six strokes better than any other team on the day.
Northwestern finished in third, with Oregon following in fourth, Minnesota coming in fifth, Washington finishing in sixth and finally Oregon State ending in seventh.
The Badgers came out struggling yesterday, compiling a total score of 316 in the first set of 18 holes on the day. They improved greatly in the second round on Sunday, shooting a 297, but failed to bring their best games again today. Wisconsin finished Monday by shooting a 309, 21-over par.
Michigan State's Ryan Brehm shot a phenomenal round on Monday to vault himself towards the individual title. Brehm shot an individual-leading five-under on the day to finish five strokes ahead of UCLA's Kevin Chappell, the leader after day one who shot four-over on Monday.
For the Badgers, Danny Zimmerman (Verona, Wis.) was the team's top performer. The junior transfer from Illinois finished at 225, nine-over, to end up in a tie for 16th place.
Dan Woltman (Beaver Dam, Wis.), who was not himself on Sunday, looked better today, shooting at just two-over to move up into a tie for 36th place overall.
Jordan Elsen (Kenosha, Wis.) ended the competition at 15-over, just one stroke behind Woltman, to position himself in a tie for 39th place.
UW's final three competitors were Nick Engen (McFarland, Wis.), who finished at 18-over, tied-for-45th place competing as an individual, Tyler Obermueller (River Falls, Wis.), who was just behind at 20-over, good enough to tie him for 47th place and Jeff Kaiser, who tied for 51st place by shooting 25-over.
