Badgers Claim Badger Blast Title, Down UW-Green Bay
October 06, 2007 | Softball
The University of Wisconsin softball team shut out UW-Green Bay Saturday afternoon at the Goodman Softball Complex en route to a 2-0 victory, earning the team the title in the Badger Blast fall tournament.
Junior pitcher Leah Vanevenhoven (Kaukauna, Wis.) pitched six and one-third innings, allowing four hits and no runs, while striking out four to earn the win. Freshman Kristyn Hansen (Franksville, Wis.) came on in relief and got the final two outs to record the save.
The Pheonix tried to rally in the top of the seventh when Vanessa Lefans walk loaded the bases with no outs. Kim Cooney hit what could have been the game-tying single, but Theresa Borutas quickly threw the ball home to get the leadoff runner out.
Wisconsin was the first team to score, and put two tallies on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Senior catcher Joey Daniels got things started with her perfectly executed bunt down the first base line. Senior Katie Hnatyk loaded the bases with her single to left field. Daniels scored on Alexis Garcias fielders choice and later in the inning, Lynn Anderson brought Garcia home with her single to center field.
The combination of UWs pitching and defense held UW-Green Bay to only four hits in the game.
Fans are invited to attend the Alumni Game, Sunday, Oct. 7 at at Goodman Diamond when current and former badgers square off in this friendly competition.
