Current Badgers Prevail
October 07, 2007 | Softball
The 2008 University of Wisconsin softball squad beat the team of Badger alumnae 9-0 Saturday at Goodman Diamond.
The current squad got on the board in the second inning, as senior Lynn Anderson got things started with a single to third base. Pitching alum Eden Brock then gave up two consecutive walks before hitting senior catcher Joey Daniels which allowed Anderson to walk in for a run. Brock then walked freshman Livi Abney which brought junior Theresa Boruta home for the second run of the inning. Senior Katie Hnatyk hit a two-run single to center field to give the current Badgers a 4-0 lead, which they never relinquished.
The 2008 Badgers scored two more runs in the third inning as junior Ricci Robben was walked by Brock to load the bases. Daniels' botched sacrifice fly still got the job done as freshman Jennifer Krueger crossed home plate and scored another run for the current UW team. After Katie Soderberg hit into a fielder's choice to advance the runners, Wisconsin then capitalized on an alumnae error as Robben scampered home to extend its lead.
The present UW team scored three more runs in the sixth to solidify the win. Freshman Cassandra Wilkosz started the inning with a walk followed by a stolen base by Krueger who pinch-ran for Wilkosz. Anderson and Abney then hit back-to-back singles which brought in Wilkosz, as she had been re-instated as the runner at second. Katie Soderberg sealed the victory for the 2008 squad with her two-run single.
Alumna Jaime Prickett recorded the first hit of the game for the alumni squad in the top half of the fifth inning. This was also the only hit that the current UW pitching squad allowed.
Kris Zacher, who holds Wisconsin's individual single-season record in hits (63), went 0-3 on the day but made a SportsCenter web gem-worthy catch in the first inning that robbed junior Alexis Garcia of an extra-base hit.
All in all, both teams had a good time competing against one another, as many memories and funny stories were traded after the game.
During warm-ups, Boo Gillette, who holds the no. two spot on UW's career leaders in career games played, games started, home runs and total bases, said, 'Gosh do I miss playing; it stinks to be old.'
The 2008 squad concludes its fall season with a red vs. white intra-squad scrimmage, Saturday, Oct. 13 at 10 a.m. at Goodman Diamond.
