Badgers End Tied for Fifth in Memphis
October 09, 2007 | Men's Golf
After inclement weather cut their day short yesterday, the UW men's golf team concluded their play in the Memphis Intercollegiate today, finishing the competition at 15-over par to tie them for fifth place. The tournament was played in Memphis, Tenn., at Colonial Country Club, a par-72, 7334-yard course.
Mississippi won the 15-team invite in convincing fashion. Ole Miss finished the competition at four-under par with a score of 572, a full eight strokes ahead of second place Southern Mississippi.
Following in third place was Memphis at seven-over, one stroke ahead of fourth-place Penn State, whose sophomore Kevin Foley finished as the individual leader at six-under par. Mississippi State tied the Badgers for fifth.
The tournament was supposed to last for 54 holes of action, but was cut to 36 due to yesterday's postponement.
There were no real surprises regarding Wisconsin's individual play throughout the tournament. Gifted juniors Dan Woltman (Beaver Dam, Wis.) and Danny Zimmerman (Verona, Wis.) put forth their typical sold efforts. The tandem finished tied-for-18th overall at three-over par with total scores of 147.
The two used opposite paths to arrive at their final scores. Woltman shot an impressive 71, one-under par, through the first 18 holes but dropped to a 76 in round two. Zimmerman, on the other hand, shot a 76 in the first round, only to bounce back with a 71 in the second set of 18 holes.
Tyler Obermueller (River Falls, Wis.), also a junior, finished right on Zimmerman and Woltman's heels. Obermueller shot a 74 in the second round to finish at 149, good for five-over par and a tie for 30th place.
Senior Jeff Kaiser (Onalaska, Wis.) ended at six-over and an even score of 150 to position himself in a tie for 34th place while sophomore Jordan Elsen (Kenosha, Wis.) tied for 45th place with a score of 152, eight-over par.

The Badgers, who finished tied-for-second place in their previous two competitions, will look to get back into the swing of things next week when they participate in the PGA West in La Quinta, Calif., at Greg Norman Course.
