Badgers Travel to Arizona to Battle No. 4 Wildcats
November 02, 2007 | Women's Swimming & Diving
The No.16 University of Wisconsin women's swimming and diving team returns to action this weekend as it heads to Arizona to take on the Wildcats in a dual meet. The event will take on place on Friday Nov. 2 at 2:00 p.m. (CT) at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center.
Arizona will prove to be a formidable foe as it is currently ranked as the No. 4 team in the nation by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America. The Wildcats have finished no worse than third in the last four NCAA championships and return 17 swimmers that competed in last year's event.
The Badgers (3-0) are coming off a successful weekend at the SMU Classic. While the team finished fifth out of six teams, it was facing tough competition and it still posted five NCAA 'B' times. The meet's five other teams (Southern California, Southern Methodist, Alabama, Texas AM and Florida State) were all at least receiving votes in the CSCAA poll.
Seniors Jackie Vavrek and Hannah McClurg, junior Jen Illescas, sophomore Gabby Maddalena, freshman Maggie Meyer and the relay team of McClurg, Meyer, freshman Kelsey Gergen and Vavrek all notched NCAA 'B' qualifying times.
Vavrek, Illescas and Meyer each recorded two qualifying times. Vavrek earned an individual mark by placing second in the 50-yard freestyle as she finished in a time of 23.16. She was also a part of the 200-yard freestyle relay team that took first in a time of 1:33.43.
Illescas earned both of her marks individually. Her first qualifying time came in the 500-yard freestyle as she finished in a time of 4:51.70, while her second time came in the 200-yard butterfly, finishing with a time of 2:01.94.
Meyer earned her mark in the 200-yard backstroke as she finished in a time of 2:01.47.
McClurg and Gergen each earned their respective 'B' times as members of the previously mentioned 200-yard freestyle relay team.
