Turney's Two-Hitter Tops Wisconsin
April 28, 2007 | Softball
Michigan State starter Rachel Turney threw a two-hit shutout to lead the Spartans to a 2-0 win and a series sweep of the Wisconsin Badgers Saturday at Old College Field.
It was just the third time the Badgers had been shut out all season and just the second time the team tallied less than three hits. State (28-24, 4-8 Big Ten) had just four hits itself, but got an RBI triple from Nicole Mercado and a homer from Meghan Darhower.
Turney faced one batter more than the minimum and struck out seven to move to 9-9 on the season. Theresa Boruta had an infield single in the third and Joey Daniels led off the fourth with a base hit to right for Wisconsin (26-17, 5-9). Letty Olivarez (9-7) was the hard-luck pitcher after limiting State to four hits over five innings.
The result creates a log jam near the bottom of the Big Ten standings as teams compete for a conference tournament bid. Wisconsin will still maintain the eighth and final spot in the tournament at the end of the day, but the Badgers have ninth-ranked Michigan on tap for a doubleheader Sunday in Ann Arbor.
