July 24, 2007 | Softball
Five Wisconsin softball players earned Academic All-Big Ten honors, the conference announced today. The honorees are: senior pitcher Eden Brock, senior outfielder Sam Polito, junior catcher Joey Daniels, sophomore infielder Theresa Boruta and sophomore outfielder Valyncia Raphael.
To be selected, student athletes must have a 3.0 or better cumulative grade point average, be a letterwinner and a non-first year student.
Brock (Wakulla County, Fla.) is the third pitcher in UW history to record 500 strikeouts, has the second-most wins in UW history (65), ranks second in appearances (142) and starts (116) and has the second-best win percentage (65-50, .565).
Polito (Stevens Point, Wis.) is the tenth UW player to earn Academic All-Big Ten honors every year she was eligible. She is Wisconsin's all-time leading scorer (138 runs), tied the program record for career hits (203) and started all 203 games of her four-year career, the fourth most starts in school history.
Daniels (Oakley, Calif.) currently ranks first in on-base percentage (.411), ninth in doubles (20) and RBI (63) and 12th in runs scored (65) among all-time UW leaders.
Boruta (Chicago, Ill.) recorded the game-winning RBI single in the ninth inning against NCAA qualifier Florida (2/10) in her first at bat of the season and had a four-game hitting streak during road contests at UW-Green Bay and Michigan State (April 24-28).
Raphael (La Habra, Calif.) committed just one error all season and had four outfield assists and delivered the go-ahead single in the eighth inning of a 5-4 win over Georgia State (3/3).
