August 25, 2007 | Men's Cross Country
Former University of Wisconsin track athletes Matt Tegenkamp and Simon Bairu will compete at the 2007 IAAF World Championships in Athletics, beginning today and running through Sept. 2 in Osaka, Japan. Tegenkamp, a Lee's Summit, Mo., native, will run as part of Team USA while Bairu, who grew up in Regina, Sasketchewan, will run for his native Canada. Both will be competing in their first World Championships.
Bairu will compete on Monday in the 10,000 meters while Tegenkamp is slated to participate in the 5,000 meter first round on Friday. The 5,000-meter final will be held on Sept. 2.
Bairu, a 2006 UW graduate, earned his trip to Japan after recording a third-place finish at the Canadian 10,000 meter championships on June 10 in Abbotsford, British Columbia.
Tegenkamp qualified for the World Championships by finishing second in the 5,000 meters at the USA Track & Field Championships in Indianapolis. The 2005 graduate currently sits fourth on the all-time U.S. 5,000 meter list with a 13:04.90 personal best at the DN Galan meet in Stockholm, Sweden on July 25.
