
Tegenkamp Advances to 5,000-Meter Final

Former Badger Matt Tegenkamp advanced to the final of the 5,000 meters at the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) World Championships today in Osaka, Japan.
Tegenkamp, a 2004 graduate of the UW, finished third in his heat to automatically qualify for Sunday's final. The Lee's Summit, Mo., native crossed in 13 minutes, 35.05 seconds. Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya won the faster of two heats in 13:33.37. Tariku Bekele of Ethiopia won the first heat in 13:46.42.
Tegenkamp, who is competing in his first World Track & Field Championships, qualified for the meet by finishing second in the 5,000 meters at the USA Track & Field Championships in Indianapolis. He currently sits fourth on the all-time U.S. 5,000 meter list with a 13:04.90 personal best at the DN Galan meet in Stockholm, Sweden on July 2.
