UW Has Solid First Day in California
September 11, 2007 | Men's Golf
The UW men's golf team put forth an impressive performance on Monday, the team 's first action of the 2007-08 season. Currently positioned at third place in the 18-team St. Mary's College Invitational in Pebble Beach, Calif., the Badgers will finish the two-day tournament today and make an attempt to shoot for first place.
After each of Wisconsin's five players played two rounds on the par-72, 6857-yard Poppy Hills Golf Course, UW finds itself with a team total of 10-over par.
Just two teams lead the Badgers at the moment, as Baylor is in first with an impressive five-over par and UAB holds a one-stroke lead over UW at nine-over. Rounding out the top-five teams are Memphis at 11-over and Santa Clara at 13-over.
UW's strong start has been largely due to the wonderful opening play of juniors Danny Zimmerman (Verona, Wis.) and Dan Woltman (Beaver Dam, Wis.).
With Zimmerman at two-under par through two rounds of play and Woltman right behind at one-under, the two Badgers are currently positioned at third and fourth place overall out of 95 total players.
At three-under, UAB's Brad Smith and Baylor's Wesley Williams are the only student-athletes standing between UW's talented juniors and an individual first place standing.
Along with Zimmerman and Woltman, Wisconsin's third-place start has also been aided by Jeff Kaiser (Onalaska, Wis.), Jordan Elsen (Kenosha, Wis.) and Tyler Obermueller (River Falls, Wis.).
Obermueller is tied for 41st place at the moment with a score of six-over, Elsen is tied for 53rd at eight-over and Kaiser is close behind with an 11-over, tied for 66th overall.
The Badgers will resume and finish play today at the St. Mary's College Invitational in Pebble Beach, Calif., at Poppy Hills Golf Course.
