UW Finishes Tied for Second at Gopher Invitational
September 16, 2007 | Men's Golf
The UW men's golf team tied for a second place finish amidst a collection of many tough teams at this weekend's Gopher Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn., at Spring Hill Golf Club.
With a final score of 26-over par, Wisconsin ended the two-day tournament tied with Arkansas for second place in the 12-team competition. Lamar University, one of the top-ranked golf programs in the nation, finished in first by shooting four-over par.
While they were unable to top Lamar, the Badgers did finish as the top Big Ten participant, ahead of Indiana (T-4th), Michigan State (7th), Minnesota (8th) and Illinois (10th).
Similar to last week's competition in California, UW's high placing was largely due to the stellar play of its talented juniors, Danny Zimmerman (Verona, Wis.) and Dan Woltman (Beaver Dam, Wis.)
A newcomer to Wisconsin after transferring from Illinois, Zimmerman finished tied for first place among the 66 competing individuals. Zimmerman and Lamar's Casey Clendenon were the only two student-athletes to shoot under par in the 54-hole invitational, topping the field at one-under par.
Zimmerman was the overall leader after Saturday's 36 holes but struggled in his final 18 on Sunday, shooting seven-over par to let Clendenon catch him for the lead.
Woltman was not far behind Zimmerman. The junior shot two-over par, good for sixth place overall. Woltman too slipped a bit on Sunday, shooting five-over par after entering the day at three-under.
Tyler Obermueller (River Falls, Wis.) took the opposite route toward his final standing. Obermueller struggled on Saturday but shot two-under on Sunday, tied for the second best score of the day, to finish in a tie for 32nd place at 14-over.
Rounding out Wisconsin's roster were Jeff Kaiser (Onalaska, Wis.), who finished tied for 47th place at 18-over, and Pat Duffy (Appleton, Wis.), who shot a 20-over to finish at 54th place.
The Badgers will now have time off until Oct. 1 when they head to Richmond, Va., to compete at the VCU Invitational.
