Badgers Open Season in California
September 08, 2007 | Men's Golf
After a 2006-07 season that saw the UW men's golf team record its second-best team season average in school history and qualify for Regionals for the first time since 1993, UW opens its much anticipated 2007-08 season on Monday, Sept. 10. The Badgers will kick off their year at the St. Mary's College Invitational at Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach, Calif.
The Badgers plan to leave Madison on Saturday, partake in a practice round on Sunday and shoot into their first real action of the season on Monday. The invitational, hosted by St. Mary's College, will last two days, starting on Sept. 10 and finishing on Sept. 11.
Wisconsin will send five players to The Golden State to participate in the competition. Making the trip for UW will be veterans Dan Woltman (Beaver Dam, Wis.), Jeff Kaiser (Onalaska, Wis.), Jordan Elsen (Kenosha, Wis.) and Tyler Obermueller (River Falls, Wis.), who will all attempt to build off of their successful campaigns with Wisconsin last season. Newcomer Dan Zimmerman (Verona, Wis.) rounds out Wisconsin's five-man squad. After transferring from Illinois' golf team, the St. Mary's College Invitational will mark Zimmerman's first action as a Badger.
The St. Mary's College Invitational will match UW up against some of the top teams on the collegiate level. Joining Wisconsin in the 18-team competition will be St. Mary's College, Baylor, Colorado, Eastern Michigan, Houston, Kansas, Long Beach St., Loyola Maramount, Memphis, Miami (Ohio), Nebraska, Nevada, San Francisco, San Jose St., Santa Clara, UAB and Texas Arlington.
While shooting at Poppy Hills, UW's players will have a chance to experience play at one of the elite golf courses in the U.S. Along with Pebble Beach Golf Links and Spyglass Hill Golf Course, Poppy Hills is one of three courses to host the annual Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.
The Badgers will tee off for the first time of their season on Monday, Sept. 10, at Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach, Calif.
