May 09, 2008 | Softball
University of Wisconsin junior softball player Theresa Boruta was named a 2008 Big Ten Sportsmanship award honoree for softball, the Big Ten announced on Thursday.
Boruta was one of 11 softball student-athletes chosen by the conference who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. The student-athletes also must be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. Boruta is now a candidate for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award, as the conference office will honor one male and one female student-athlete from each institution at the end of the school year.
A Chicago, Ill. native, Boruta started all 55 games for the Badgers this season. Playing primarily at third base, she finished fourth on the team with a .235 batting average, while driving in five runs. Boruta led the team with nine sacrifice hits and tied for the team lead with 13 stolen bases in 15 attempts. While out on the field, Boruta was second on the team in assists with 93. In conference play, Boruta led the team with eight runs scored and was second in hits with 14.
