June 01, 2008 | Men's Golf
The UW men's golf team completed its 2007-08 season last weekend as Dan Woltman (Beaver Dam, Wis.) competed as an individual at the National Championships in West Lafayette, Ind.
Woltman finished tied for 67th place, but unfortunately missed the cut to compete in the fourth and final round at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex. The junior made UW golf history as he was the first golfer to qualify for consecutive appearances at the NCAA Championships as an individual.
Wisconsin fell short of qualifying for the NCAA Championships as a team as the top 10 teams advanced from the NCAA West Regional in Bremerton, Wash. UW took 14th place and was the lone Big Ten team in this regional.
The Badgers finished among the top 10 teams in 10 of their 11 tournaments this season. UW's best finish this season came at the VCU Shootout in Richmond, Va. as they took second place out of 15 teams with a team score of 848.
The previous weekend, at the Minnesota Invitational, Wisconsin tied for second place with its team score of 890.
During the spring portion of its schedule, the Badgers finished in eighth place in three consecutive tournaments, at the OSU Kepler Intercollegiate, Boilermaker Invitational and Big Ten Championships.
Wisconsin's team scoring average of 296.94 (9,799 strokes/ 33 rounds) is the fifth-best season average in program history.
UW bid adieu to its lone senior, Jeff Kaiser (Onalaska, Wis.). Over his four-year career, Kaiser compiled the fifth-best career scoring average (75.05) in program history. He competed in 30 rounds this season and had a season scoring average of 76.70.
Woltman led the team with his 73.97 scoring average and junior Danny Zimmerman (Middleton, Wis.) followed closely behind with his average of 74.24.
Junior Tyler Obermueller (River Falls, Wis.) competed in all 33 rounds this year and had a scoring average of 74.84. Obermueller's best tournament finish of the season came at the OSU Kepler Intercollegiate where he tied for seventh place.
Sophomore Jordan Elsen (Kenosha, Wis.) had a great year as he competed in 26 rounds, up from nine rounds in 2006-07 and recorded a scoring average of 76.61.
Woltman was named to the PING All-Region team for the second consecutive year.
