Still in the hunt
July 17, 2008 | Men's Golf
After the first day at the U.S. Bank Championship in Milwaukee, three Badgers still have a shot at making the cut. Former UW golfer Jon Turcott shot a one-over par 71 while current Badger head coach Jim Schuman and senior-to-be Dan Woltman were both at two-over par.
Turcott is tied for 95th place with such notables as Chris DiMarco and fellow Wisconsin native J.P. Hayes. Schuman and Woltman were both tied for 108th with, among others, past PGA Tour champions Fred Funk, Olin Browne and Robert Gamez.
Turcott had an up and down round, bogeying two of his first four holes before getting a stroke back with a birdie on No. 6. Two more bogeys, both on par 3s, pushed him to three-over with seven holes to play. Birdies at No. 12 and No. 15 brought Turcott back to +1. Following another bogey on the 17th hole, Turcott just missed finishing his round with an eagle, lipping out a putt and carding a birdie on No. 18 for a 71.
Schuman started on the back nine and was even par through his first five holes. He ran into trouble on No. 15, starting a run of four bogeys in the next five holes. He rebounded with a birdie on the Par 4 second hole (his 11th of the round) and another birdie on No. 5. Schuman finished his round with four consecutive pars and a two-over 72.
Woltman, the only amateur in the field, struggled a bit on the front nine, going out in 37, three-over par. He recovered to card nine consecutive pars. A birdie on No. 18, his first of the day, left him at two-over par for his round.
Richard Johnson shot a 7-under 63 to take a one-stroke lead over brothers Deane and Brenden Pappas. Seventy-five of the 131 golfers are at one-under par or worse. The lowest 70 scores plus ties advance to the weekend.
Schuman, Turcott and Woltman will all tee off in the morning on Friday. Schuman will start on No. 1 at 8:10 a.m. CT. At 8:20 a.m. Turcott's group will go off on No. 10, immediately followed by Woltman's threesome. Fans can follow the live scoring at the PGA Tour's Official Web site .
