Great Badger moments from 2007-08: No 5
August 19, 2008 | Men's Cross Country
The 2007-08 athletics season was full of many memories for Badgers fans and athletes. Before the calendar officially turns to the 2008-09 season, uwbadgers.com will re-live 15 of the top moments from the 2007-08 Wisconsin athletics season. As we approach the start of fall sports training camps, be sure to log onto uwbadgers.com to see if your favorite moment from the 2007-08 season made the list. The No. 5 moment from last year is the men's cross country team claiming a conference-record ninth-consecutive Big Ten championship.
The Big Ten might think about renaming the cross country winner's podium to the Badgers' podium, because they've owned it lately. In October of last year the Wisconsin men's runners made it a record nine-straight years that the championship stage has been full of cardinal and white. By placing five runners in the top-10, the Badgers scored 33 points and claimed the Big Ten Conference title at the Ohio State University Golf Course in Columbus, Ohio.
With the win, the Badgers broke their own conference record for consecutive titles, snapping their previous high of eight straight victories between 1985 and 1992.
Wisconsin was led by junior Matt Withrow, who took home the individual title by completing the 8,000-meter course in a time of 23 minutes, 44.37 seconds. He finished more than three seconds ahead of second-place finisher Hassan Mead of Minnesota. Fellow UW junior, Stu Eagon, finished fifth in a time of 23:55.35. Both Withrow and Eagon earned first-team All-Big Ten honors.
Fellow Badgers Andrew Lacy, Landon Peacock and Brandon Bethke rounded out the top 10 by finishing eighth through 10th, respectively. Lacy, a sophomore, finished the course in 23:58.10. Behind him was Peacock, a redshirt freshman, in a time of 24:01.84 and Bethke was less than two seconds behind him in 24:03.17. All three athletes garnered second-team All-Big Ten honors in the process.
Junior Christian Wagner (18th) and redshirt freshman Jack Bolas (19th) also finished in the top-20, while sophomores Craig Miller and Ryan Gasper placed 21st and 31st overall.
'I'm really proud of the way the guys executed the race out there today,' said last year's head coach Jerry Schumacher after the meet. 'They could not have done it better and that is really the reason for the outcome of the meet. They did it to perfection and it was just a good day to be a Badger out there. '
