September 21, 2008 | Men's Golf
The 23rd-ranked University of Wisconsin men's golf team recorded its best round of the season on Sunday and finished in sixth place at the 2008 Wolverine Intercollegiate at the par-71, 6,704-yard U-M Golf Course in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Wisconsin, which was in sixth after round two, shot a season-best round of one-under 283 to finish three strokes over-par with an 855 (286-286-283), its lowest three-round total of the season. Michigan captured the team title with an 11-under par 841.
Senior Dan Woltman (Beaver Dam, Wis.) had the top finish of the season for a Badger golfer as he ended in a tie for third place. Woltman shot his second consecutive round of three-under 68 to move up from his second-round finish of ninth. Starting on the fourth hole, Woltman was at even-par for the day through the first 15 holes. He turned it on though as he birdied the final three holes to finish five-under par with a 208 (72-68-68), a new season-best for 54 holes.
Fellow senior Danny Zimmerman (Verona, Wis.) had the best 54-hole score of his career as he carded a three-under 210 (67-72-71), breaking his old mark of 215. An even-par round of 71 on Sunday gave him a 10th place finish, his best of the season. Zimmerman started on the fourth hole and struggled early on as he was four-over par through his first nine holes. Back-to-back birdies on Nos. 13 and 14 coupled with another birdie on No. 17 got him to just one-over par. Down to his last hole, Zimmerman was able to birdie the third hole to get back to even-par.
Also posting his best 54-hole score of the season was senior Tyler Obermueller (River Falls, Wis.). He shot an even-par 71 on Sunday to end his tournament at three-over par with a 216 (73-72-71), bettering his earlier mark of 220 set last week at the Gopher Invitational. Obermueller started on the fifth hole and was at even-par through six holes. He then alternated birdies and pars on holes 11-14. Obermueller then closed out his day with eight straight pars.
Junior Jordan Elsen had his best round of the tournament in round three, firing a two-over 73 to finish in a tie for 64th. The Kenosha, Wis. native moved up seven spots as he was tied for 71st after round two, ending the tournament at 11-over par with a 224 (76-75-73). He started on the seventh hole and was one-under par through 10 holes thanks to a birdie on No. 11. Elsen hit a rough patch starting on No. 17 though as he bogeyed four of the next six holes. He ended on a positive note though, posting a birdie on the sixth and final hole.
Fellow junior Nick Engen (McFarland, Wis.) completed his first tournament of the season as he ended in a tie for 73rd place. Engen shot a final round of seven-over 78 to end 13 strokes over-par for the tournament with a 226 (74-74-78). Starting on the sixth hole, Engen was three-over par after five holes before a birdie on the 11th hole. Four consecutive bogeys after that though dropped him to six-over par. Following three straight pars, Engen bogeyed No. 1 before two birdies on the second and third holes. He ended his day with bogeys on Nos. 4 and 5.
The Badgers return to action next Monday and Tuesday when they travel to Pebble Beach, Calif. for the St. Mary's Invitational at Poppy Hills Golf Course.
