September 27, 2008 | Softball
The University of Wisconsin softball team was victorious against visiting MATC and UW-Green Bay at the Fall Festival on Saturday at the Goodman Softball Complex. The Badgers came out swinging as they defeated MATC 23-1 in the first game and finished the day off with a 3-1 win over UW-Green Bay.
The Badgers clobbered MATC in the opening game of the afternoon. Junior pitcher Letty Olivarez pitched four innings, allowing no hits and only one walk. The Badgers' success at the plate gave the coaches a chance to play with the lineup, giving some young faces game time experience. Sophomore Kristyn Hansen got the chance to pitch for three innings, resulting in three hits and one earned run.
The Badgers came ready to play as they drove in three first inning runs. There was no stopping them from there as they scored seven runs in the third, three runs in the forth, one run in the fifth, and ended the game strongly scoring nine runs in the sixth.
Livi Abney led the team hitting with five hits and four runs with freshman Jordan Skinner bringing in two runs with four hits. Upperclassmen, Olivarez and Nicole Whaley led the team with four RBI's each.
Freshman Carie Olsen was the losing pitcher for MATC as she went four innings giving up twelve hits and ten runs, only three of which were earned. Kristen Bechtolt finished the game for the Wolfpack allowing thirteen runs, eleven earned, off of fourteen Badger hits.
UW-Green Bay proved to be a little more of a challenge for the Badgers in the last game of the tournament. Both teams were scoreless through the fifth inning when junior Katie Soderberg hit a triple, driven in by Valyncia Raphael, followed by a double from senior Leah Vanevenhoven. Vanevenhoven was then driven in by a double from Jordan Skinner. Green Bay's Krissy Hanson scored the Phoenix's lone run in the sixth inning. Badger Eileen Garcia then hit a double in the bottom of the sixth to right center and was then brought in by Raphael's RBI. Garcia then closed out the game pitching for the Badgers in the top of the seventh.
Vanevenhoven was the winning pitcher allowing two hits in six innings of work. Amanda Margelofsky was the losing pitcher for the Phoenix giving up ten hits and three earned runs.
UW-Green Bay came out on top against MATC earlier in the day winning 8-0. Winning pitcher for Green Bay was sophomore Chelsie Held allowing three hits and four strike outs. MATC's pitcher freshman Carlie Olsen took the loss giving up twelve hits and eight runs.
