MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin softball team scored eight runs in the first three innings Sunday en route to an 8-0 shutout victory over Green Bay in five innings in the final game of the 2009 Fall Festival. After scoring once in the first inning, the Badgers added two more in the second and five more runs in the third inning.
Letty Olivarez got the start in the circle for the Badgers and gave up just four hits and zero runs in five innings of work, striking out five in the process.
The scoring started thanks to a bases-loaded walk in the first inning. Following a pair of singles and a walk, Maggie Spence drew ball four to give Wisconsin the early 1-0 advantage.
Olivarez helped her own cause in the second inning as her triple scored Kendall Grimm from first base. Later in the inning, Jennifer Krueger scored on an error by the Green Bay shortstop.
The team's five-run third inning was highlighted by Ashley Hanewich's three-run home run. With one out and runners on first and second, Hanewich crushed a pitch over the left field fence to put the Badgers up 6-0.
Olivarez recorded her second triple of the game later in the frame and scored along with Krueger on Jordan Skinner's single.
Krueger, Skinner, Hanewich and Olivarez all collected two hits in the win.
The Badgers open their 2010 season on Feb. 11 when they travel to Tempe, Ariz. for the ASU Kajikawa Classic. There, Wisconsin faces Texas Tech, Texas A&M, California, Creighton, Cal-State Fullerton and Oregon.
