Badgers fail to advance in ITA Midwest Regional Championships

MADISON, Wis. - The Wisconsin women’s tennis team failed to advance in the ITA Midwest Regional Championship after the third day of action as Katya Mirnova, the team’s only remaining player in the tournament, lost her singles match.

Mirnova lost to Iowa’s Lynn Poggensee-Wei by scores of 7-6(1) and 6-1.

The Badgers exit the tournament, losing both of their main draw events. Mirnova and Hannah Berner lost their main draw doubles event on Friday against Marisa Lampropoulos and Leigh Finnegan of Illinois by a score of 8-5.

Wisconsindid however produce stronger results in the second day of competition at the Alternate ITA Midwest Regional Championships.

Aleksandra Markovic went undefeated in singles play, winning against Juliana Frey of Eastern Illinois 6-0, 6-1 and against Kristina Minor of Illinois 7-6(5), 6-4. Markovic advances to the semi-finals where she faces Iowa’s Chmelarova on Sunday at 8:30 a.m.

Kathleen Saltarelli won her first match in a dominant fashion against Iowa’s Alexis Dorr 6-1, 6-1. Saltarelli then fell to Christine Stromberg of Illinois 6-3, 6-3.

Angela Chupa struggled, losing both of her singles matches. Chupa was defeated by Iowa’s Jessica Young 7-6(3), 7-5. Chupa was unable to regain her composure in the consolation match, losing to Iowa’s Merel Beelen 6-4, 6-1.

Lauren Gruber lost her opening match today as well against Iowa’s Chmelarova by scores of 6-2, 6-0. Gruber would then regroup and go on to win her consolation match against Iowa’s Dorr by scores of 6-3, 1-6, 16-14.

Chupa and Markovic lost in the semi-finals to Iowa’s duo of Klockenga and Young 8-6.

After losing yesterday’s opening doubles match, Gruber and Saltarelli won their consolation match against IPFW’s Ingrid Ballus and Yuka Kobayashi 9-8(2).
