MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin men's rowing team concluded its fall season this Sunday at the American Heritage River Fall Classic with wins in all four entered events.
The team traveled mostly novice rowers to Wyandotte, Mich., for one last opportunity to compete before they head into winter training. Wisconsin entered 13 boats in four races, including two novice and two collegiate races.
The Badgers swept the first three places in the six-boat Novice Eight race. Coxswain Sean Heyerman, Ben Ruble, Drew Miller, Lowell McNicholas, Andrew Weiland, Brady Steinbach, Alec Hub, Daniel Poquette and Tyler Dawson rowed to a 15:09 win, followed closely by coxswain Christopher Lawrence, Joseph Shook, Cody Rissman, Christian Leedle, Christopher Miller, Samuel Michaels, Casey Klein Kennedy, David Crossfield, Charles Holtz in 15:10. Coxswain Eric Rhiel, Matthew Zahares, Justin Chaudoir, Kyle Spurlock, Calvin Nuthals, Bryan Rowntree, Patrick Last, Jacob Warhuus and Matthew Hinkamp rounded out the Badger boats in 15:20.
UW also swept the first three places in the collegiate four race. Coxswain Mike Patinkin, John Cahill, Chris Stiles, Tim Aghai and Luke Juckett took the title in 15:47 followed by coxswain Rhiel, Warhuus, Hub, Poquette, Leedle in 16:12 and coxswain James Neitzel, Dan Agostinacchio, John Schoback, Dan Gengler, Sam Hoidal in 16:35.
The three Wisconsin boats in the collegiate four were trailed by a Grand Valley State boat in fourth and two more UW boats in fifth and sixth.
The Badgers competed against themselves in their final two races, entering two boats in the collegiate novice four and three in the collegiate eight.
Coxswain Heyerman, Zahares, Last, Nuthals and Rowntree beat out teammates coxswain Lawrence, Klein Kennedy, Holtz, Hinkamp and Dawson in the collegiate novice four by 13 seconds.
In the collegiate eight, coxswain Neitzel, Ryan Blasiak, Brad Betts, Kyle Spurlock, Matt Masterson, Sean Tuffy, Hub and Mark Jaffee crossed the finish line first in 13:56, followed by coxswain Patinkin, Cahill, Stiles, Agostinacchio, Schoback, Gengler, Hoidal, Aghai and Juckett in 14:44 and coxswain Lawrence, Ruble, Drew Miller, McNicholas, Weiland, Steinbach, Warhuus, Hinkamp and Poquette in 14:47.
The team will focus on training throughout the winter for the spring season, which opens in Madison on Saturday, April 10 when the Badgers face Michigan at home.
