Camden, N.J. – The No. 12 Wisconsin men's rowing team will complete their season this Friday through Sunday at the 2025 Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championships on the Cooper River.
1. WHAT TO KNOW – The Badgers are bringing four boats, competing in the varsity eight through third varsity eight race, as well as the varsity four race. UW's varsity eight is ranked No. 12heading into the weekend with 154 points in the IRCA/IRA Men's Varsity Eight Poll.
The University of California is ranked as the favorite, with 275 points. Washington is trailing behind with 263. Wisconsin faced Cal back in April, and last faced the Huskies during the Head of the Charles regatta in October.
As a team, the Badgers rank No. 13 with 149 points in the poll regarding points for the Ten Eyck Trophy for team points. Washington leads the Ten Eyck Team Points poll with 283 points, followed by California (278) and Harvard (267).
2. IRA HISTORY – Since 2000, only five schools – California, Harvard, Washington, Wisconsin, and Yale – have claimed varsity eight national titles, with the Badgers winning the 2008 Varsity Challenge Cup. Washington won the 2024 title.
The crew's last boat to earn a top-10 finish was three years ago when the 2022 second varsity eight took ninth.
The Badgers own 14 Ten Eyck Trophies all-time, second-most behind Washington's 17. UW last captured the Ten Eyck Trophy in 2002, which ended a four-year run with the trophy, extending to five out of six between 1997 and 2002.
Last year, Wisconsin placed 18th. After the 2024 IRA National Championship, head coach Beau Hoopman said, "We're returning everyone except for three seniors and two fifth-year coxswains whose efforts through the Covid year helped keep this team together and afloat. Next year, the pressure will be on the underclassmen to improve and get us back to baseline."
3. WHAT'S GONE DOWN SO FAR – The Badgers have had a strong and steady season. They have been consistently ranked in the top 15 teams since April. They kicked off their fall season at the Head of the Charles regatta, where the Badgers placed 26 out of 30 entries. Two weeks ago, the varsity eight boat finished third in the petite final at the Eastern Sprints.
