MADISON, Wis. - A goal with 61 seconds left in regulation, forced Wisconsin to its second overtime, resulting in a 2-2 tie against Wayne State on Thursday night at the Kohl Center. The tie marks the first of the season for Wisconsin with a 6-4-1 record while Wayne State moves to 3-5-3 overall.
In the first Thursday night game in school history, neither team scored in the second period, however, each team tallied a goal in both the first and third periods.
Wisconsin junior Geena Prough (Farmington, Mich.) put the Badgers on the scoreboard within the first three minutes of the contest. At the 2:51 mark, from the blue line, sophomore Brooke Ammerman (River Vale, N.J.) sent the puck to the center of the ice to Prough. Prough skated the puck up the ice and took a shot from between the two face-off circles to make the score 1-0. The goal marked her third of the season and helped Ammerman to an eight-game point streak.
With the man advantage, the Warriors answered with 6:16 left in the first period. From the left face-off circle, Christine Jefferson passed the puck to Chelsea Burnett. Burnett one-timed it from in front of the blue line to tie the score at 1-1. Alyssa Baldin notched the secondary assist.
After a scoreless second period, with 6:31 left in the third frame, senior captain Jasmine Giles (Ottawa, Ontario) passed the puck from inside the right circle to freshman Stefanie McKeough (Carlsbad Springs, Ontario). From outside the right circle, McKeough placed a powerful shot on goal that ricocheted off Wayne State’s goaltender, Lindsey Park. Senior Kyla Sanders (Fort Myers, Fla.) capitalized on the deflection to record her second goal of the season and give the Badgers the 2-1 lead.
At the 18:59 mark, three seconds after the Warriors pulled Park, Gina Buquet found the back of the net for the equalizer. From behind the goal line, Wayne State’s Alyssa Baldin passed it to Buquet who put it past UW’s goaltender Becca Ruegsegger (Lakewood, Colo.) from the slot.
After a five minute overtime the game was decided as a 2-2 draw, but both teams opted to go into a shootout. Wayne State won 1-0 in three rounds. However, the game remains a tie on record.
Each team was productive in front of the net with Wisconsin and Wayne State recording 31 and 28 shots, respectively.
Park tallied 29 saves for the Warriors and freshman Ruegsegger finished with 26 saves in-net for the Badgers.
Wayne State went 1-for-6 on the power play while Wisconsin went 0-for-4 with the man advantage.
Wisconsin hopes to seal the second game of the series on Friday afternoon after a short turnaround.
“We have to go back and see what we can do better,” Interim head coach Tracey DeKeyser said. “Both teams are in the same position and we’ll see who recovers most quickly and who comes out with the most focus, and with the fighting attitude. It takes 60 minutes, not just one goal in the first ten minutes of the game, that’s what we need to do, figure out how to play 60 complete minutes.”
The Badgers close-out an eight-game homestand on Friday at 2 p.m. at the Kohl Center.
