MANKATO, Minn. – Wisconsin’s Brooke Ammerman knocked in two goals as UW’s Alannah McCready made 26 saves in the Badgers’ 3-0 shutout win Friday night against Minnesota State. Wisconsin moves to 11-5-3 and 8-4-1 in the WCHA, improving to a five-game unbeaten streak.

Wisconsin matched the Maverick’s 10 shots on goal in the first period, however, it was the Badgers who found the back of the net in the final two minutes of the period. After the Badgers came up scoreless on an early 5-on-3 opportunity that lasted over a minute Ammerman gave the Badgers the 1-0 lead going into the locker room.

Junior Anne Dronen brought the puck down and passed it off to Ammerman. The Badgers’ leading scorer then carried the puck across the ice to the far faceoff circle where she fired a wrist shot to the corner of the net at 18:44 in the frame.

“I was impressed with the way we persevered through a difficult opening period,” said interim head coach Tracey DeKeyser. “McCready kept us in the game, generating momentum and making some great, timely saves.”

The Badgers extended their lead to three after Ammerman and senior captain Jasmine Giles each tallied a goal. Freshman Brianna Decker pushed the puck out of the UW zone to Kranz who tossed the puck down the boards. Ammerman picked the puck up and skated in to the near faceoff circle, finding the back of the net for her second goal of the night and 14th of the season. Ammerman scored just 5:44 into the second period.

Wisconsin picked up its eighth power-play goal of the season during a 4-on-3 opportunity for the Badgers. Giles and sophomore Carolyne Prevost played the puck from behind the net to the slot where freshman Alev Kelter passed it back out to Giles at the far  faceoff circle. Giles capitalized on the quick pass beating MSU’s Alli Altmann to the lower right corner at 10:08 for her second goal of the season. Kelter also picked up her first point of the season with the assist.

The Badgers held the Mavericks scoreless fighting off three penalties in the third period. McCready had 6 saves in the final frame to secure her first shutout of the season and the Badgers second of the season.

Wisconsin outshot the Mavericks 32-26, while Altmann stopped 29 Badger shots. Wisconsin went 1-for-5 on the power play while the Mavericks came up scoreless in four opportunities.

The Badgers look to complete the sweep Saturday at 3 p.m. at the All Seasons Arena.
