ANN ARBOR, Mich. –The University of Wisconsin women’s tennis team concluded competition at the ITA Midwest Regional Championship on Sunday, finishing play in the singles main draw and the doubles draw at the event hosted by Michigan.
The Badgers advanced three players to compete in the singles main draw, including juniors Alaina Trgovich and Aleksandra Markovic and freshman Nicky Stracar.
Stracar won a pair of matches in singles main draw on Saturday, defeating Depaul’s Christiana Raymond, 6-2, 6-2, and Notre Dame’s Britney Sanders, 6-2, 6-1. Stracar faced Michigan’s Brooke Bolender on Sunday, dropping both sets, 6-3, 6-4, eliminating her from the tournament.
Trgovich dropped her first match of the main draw to Northwestern’s Linda Abu Mushrefova, 6-4, 6-2, eliminating her from the tournament. She was then defeated by IPFW’s Ingrid Ballus, 6-4, 6-0, in a consolation match.
Markovic was also knocked out of the tournament, losing to Northwestern’s Brittany Wowchuk, 6-2, 6-1. Markovic finishes the ITA’s with a 2-1 record. Stracar and Markovic both earned a place to compete in the main draw after advancing past the singles qualifying round.
In doubles play, the duo of junior Angela Chupa and Stracar finished the ITA’s with a 1-1 record. The pair defeated Eastern Illinois’ Prisner/Whitley, 8-3, and lost to 9-12 seed Haviland/Steele of Ohio State, 8-2.
The doubles team of sophomore Hannah Berner and Trgovich were given a 9-12 seed in the tournament. After a bye in the first round, the team lost to Arkron's Jogasuria/Pantusart in a walkover.
Markovic and junior Lauren Gruber went 0-1 in the tournament after a first round bye and 8-0 loss to second-seeded Taney/Tatsuna of Michigan.
The Badgers will now take a two-week break from competition in preparation for the WMU Invitational in Kalamazoo, Mich., Nov. 5-7.
