CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The No. 4 Wisconsin wrestling team wrapped up the fifth-annual ACC Challenge Sunday night, going 3-0 against No. 15 Virginia Tech, North Carolina and Chattanooga. The Badgers scored a total of 76 points in the event.
Five Badger wrestlers went 3-0 in the Challenge, increasing their season records to 4-0.
No. 3 redshirt sophomore Tyler Graff went 3-0 at 133 lbs. at the challenge, winning twice by decision and once by a pin. The 2010 All-American defeated Virginia Tech's No. 8 Devin Carter by an 8-2 decision, North Carolina's Mike Rapp in a 15-9 decision and Chattanooga's Cody Hood by pin at 1:48.
No.1 junior Andrew Howe also went undefeated at the challenge, improving his 2010-11 record to 4-0. Howe had two wins by major decision and another by decision. The 2010 165 lbs. NCAA champion beat Virginia Tech's Chris Moon, North Carolina's Thomas Scotton and Chattanooga's Brandon Wright.
No. 19 redshirt sophomore Ben Jordan went 3-0 at 197 lbs., including two wins by fall. Jordan claimed victory over Virginia Tech's Matt Epperly by pin at 5:40, North Carolina's Andre Petroski by an 8-2 decision and Chattanoga's Levi Clemons by pin at 1:58.
At 184 lbs., junior Travis Rutt defeated three opponents, including two ranked wrestlers. Rutt beat Virginia Tech's No. 11 Tommy Spellman by a 9-1 major decision, North Carolina's Antonia Giorgio by an 8-3 decision and Chattanooga's No. 15 Jason McCroskey by a 13-6 decision.
Heavyweight and No. 14-ranked redshirt senior Eric Bugenhagen also went 3-0 at the challenge. Bugenhagen first defeated Virginia Tech's No. 16 David Marone by a 6-5 decision, shut out North Carolina's Ben Brooks by a 6-0 decision and beat Chattanooga's Matt Lettner by a 10-3 decision.
No. 2 redshirt senior Trevor Brandvold extended his season record to 3-0, going 2-0 with two major decisions at the ACC Challenge. The 197 lbs. wrestler took down Virginia Tech's Chris Penny by a 12-4 major decision and North Carolina's Zach Bennett by a 12-0 major decision.
At 149 lbs., No. 16 redshirt freshman Cole Schmitt went 2-1 in competition. Schmitt claimed victories over North Carolina's Daniel Helena and Dean Pavlo of Chattanooga. Schmitt's one loss came against No. 19 Virginia Tech's Brian Stephen.
True freshman Shane McQuade wrestled for UW at 125 lbs. He went 1-2 on the day, defeating North Carolina's Jake Corrill in a 7-2 decision and losing Virginia Tech's No. 10 Jarrod Garnett and Chattanooga's Prescott Garne.
Redshirt freshman John Prezzia won his only match of the ACC Challenge, defeating North Carolina's Corey Mock 6-4 at 157 lbs.
Redshirt freshman Shawn Perry went 0-2 at 157 lbs. Perry lost to Virginia Tech's No. 12 Pete Yates by a 15-0 tech fall and Chattanooga's Dan Waddell by a 4-0 decision.
Redshirt freshman Danny Arnel went 0-3 in the tournament at 141 lbs., losing to Virginia Tech's No. 7 Chris Diaz by a 15-0 tech fall, North Carolina's Danny Lopes by a 4-0 decision and Chattanooga's Trevor Herro by a 10-5 decision.
The Badgers return to the mat in two weeks, when they compete in the Cliff Keen Invite in Las Vegas, N.V. December 3-4.
