EVANSTON, Ill. -- After the first session of competition at the 48th annual Midlands Championships, the Wisconsin wrestling team sits in second place with 58.5 points. Redshirt sophomore Tyler Graff (133 lbs.), redshirt sophomore Cole Schmitt (149 lbs.), junior Andrew Howe (165 lbs.) and junior Travis Rutt (184 lbs.) are still in contention for the titles in their respective weight classes, while redshirt sophomore Ben Jordan (174 lbs.) is still vying for third place.

UW trails only Lehigh with 65 points, while Iowa sits in third place with 52.5.

Graff advances to the semifinals after going 3-0 on the first day of competition. The 2009 Midlands 133 lbs. champion's first win came with a 19-8 major decision over Lou Ruland of Maryland. Graff then earned a 24-5 technical fall over Purdue's Matt Fields at 7:00 in his second matchup and defeated Rider's Jimmy Kircher with a 22-6 technical fall at 3:36 in his final bout.

No. 6 seed redshirt sophomore Schmitt slated a 16-0 technical fall victory at 6:58 over Eastern Michigan's Corey Phillips and advanced after registering a 8-2 decision over Nebraska's Ross Grande at 149 lbs. Schmitt joins Graff in the quarterfinals after obtaining a 17-6 major decision over Case's Dukes.

En route to his second-straight Midlands title at 165 lbs., No. 1 seed junior Howe conquered Iowa State's (unattached) Michael Moreno with a 17-5 major decision in his first match of the day. Howe then registered a pin over Eastern Michigan's Nick Hendrick at 6:36 and becomes the third Badgers in the quarterfinals after defeating Lehigh's No. 8 seed Brandon Hatchett, 9-5.

No. 3 seed junior Rutt earned a 7-2 decision over Caly Poly's Kelan Bragg in his first match on Monday. Rutt then pinned ASU's (unattached) Kevin Radford at 6:02 in his second bout. Rutt joins Graff, Howe and Schmitt in tomorrow's semifinals after capturing a 4-0 decision over Pitt's Max Thomusseit.

No. 10 seed redshirt sophomore Jordan fell to Iowa's Mike Evans in his first matchup at 174 lbs. In his first battle of the consolation bracket, Jordan defeated Iowa State's Mikey England, 11-3. Jordan then defeated Bucknell's David Thompson, 5-2, and scored a 9-3 victory over Cal Poly's Dominic Kastl at 174 lbs. to continue competition tomorrow.

Derrick Borlie wrestled at 197 lbs. for Wisconsin and captured a 9-1 major decision over Northwestern's Marcus Shrewsbery in the first round. Borlie then fell to Lehigh's Joe Kennedy by a 3-0 decision. In his first consolation match of the day, Borlie came out victorious with a 9-4 decision over Rutgers' Mike Wagner, but fell to No. 6 seed Brent Haynes by technical fall, 18-2 at 6:49, eliminating him from the tournament.

With a win in his first match of the tournament, redshirt senior Eric Bugenhagen obtained a 8-3 decision over Northern Illinois' Dakota Greenhaw. Central Michigan's Jarod Trice then capitalized in a 3-1 victory over Bugenhagen in the final seconds in his second bout of the tournament. In his first round of the consolation bracket, Bugenhagen conquered Clarion's McCorkie with an 11-1 major decision, but he was pinned at 2:17 by Iowa State's Matt Gibson.

After starting the tournament off with a bye, redshirt sophomore Kalvin York (157 lbs.) was defeated by in-state foe Dillon Bera of UW-Parkside by a 3-0 decision. York then defeated teammate Perry 5-4 in the first round of consolation, and then beat Bucknell's Nick Czapla, 6-4. York's run in the consolation bracket came to an end after losing by a 10-5 deficit decision to Lehigh's Brian Tanen.

True freshman Shane McQuade (125 lbs.) wrestled UNI's Nick Smith in the first round, but lost the bout by an 11-2 major decision. In his first consolation bout, McQuade dropped a 6-1 decision to Triton's Jose Torres, eliminating him from the 2010 Midlands.

At 141 lbs., No. 6 seed Todd Schavrien of Missouri captured a 16-0 tech fall victory over redshirt freshman Danny Arnel in the third period. Arnel then dropped his second match of the day to Bucknell's Zac Hancock, who grabbed an 11-1 major decision in the first round of consolation. The loss ends Arnel's participation in the tournament.

Redshirt freshman Shawn Perry was the first Badger to hit the mat on Wednesday morning. He took on No. 6 seed Barret Abel of Cal Poly at 157 lbs. and fell at 1:19. In his first consolation match, Perry lost to teammate York, 5-4, knocking him out of the tournament. Wrestling continues tomorrow at noon inside the Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Ill.
