MADISON, Wis. – The host Wisconsin women’s tennis team took on No. 15 Clemson in the consolation draw of the ITA National Team Indoor Championship on Saturday morning. Amidst a busy morning at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium, the Badgers put up hard fought battle, however, the Tigers proved to be too much, falling 6-1.
The Badgers started off the morning dropping the doubles point to put Clemson up 1-0. At the No. 3 slot, Katya Mirnova and Jessica Seyferth were the only Badger duo to come out with a lead, going up 4-3 in the match. Estefania Balda and Laurianne Henry of Clemson fought back to go up 5-4 before the Badger duo came from behind to tie it up and force a tiebreak. Seyferth and Mirnova made it close, but eventually dropped the match, 9-8 (7).
With the doubles point decided, the Badgers challenged Clemson in singles. A day after knocking off her first ranked opponent, freshman Hannah Berner couldn’t overcome Henry at the No. 5 slot, dropping the match 6-1, 6-1.
After Mirnova dropped her match at the No. 1 slot, Seyferth came out strong for the Badgers taking on Ina Hadziselimovic in the No. 3 singles spot. Seyferth earned the win in two sets, 6-2, 6-3. Seyferth's win tightened the score to 3-1.
Wisconsin then fell in the Nos. 2 and 4 slots as Clemson clinched the match. Alaina Trgovich didn't give up, overcoming Clemson’s Estefania Balda in the first set, despite being down earlier in the match. Trgovich won 7-5, but fell 6-0 in the second to take the match to a third set. The score stayed close throughout the third set and went to a tiebreak where Balda eventually came out on top winning 7-6 (14).
