Badgers defeat Boilermakers, 27-11

MADISON, Wis.--The No. 13 Wisconsin wrestling team (6-8, 2-2) knocked off 24th-ranked Purdue (10-8, 1-4) in West Lafayette, Ind. in a decisive 27-11 victory. Wisconsin claimed seven individual victories in the matchup.

The match began at 184 lbs. where No. 16 sophomore Travis Rutt faced off against senior Nick Corpe. Rutt won by a 6-2 decision over Corpe, giving the Badgers a 3-0 lead to start out the dual. Corpe defeated Rutt 5-1 in their previous meeting in the 2008-09 season.

The Badgers added another victory to their belt with a win at 197 lbs. No. 8 junior Trevor Brandvold defeated No. 11 Logan Brown by an 8-3 decision and gave Wisconsin a 6-0 lead over Purdue. The win marks Brandvold’s sixth straight victory and extends his record to 13-3 on the year.

At heavyweight, junior Eric Bugenhagen then took on freshman Adam Walls. Bugenhagen added three points to the Badgers’ lead with a 4-1 decision over Walls. This victory snaps Bugenhagen’s four game losing streak and is now 11-15 overall in the 2009-10 season.

The Boilermakers claimed their first victory at 125 lbs. as senior Drew Hammen dropped a match to No. 17 freshman Cashé Quiroga by a score of 6-4. The win cut Wisconsin’s lead to 9-3.

No. 7 redshirt freshman Tyler Graff then wrestled junior Matt Fields at 133 lbs. Graff registered his third pin of the year at 5:30 to extend the Badgers’ lead to 15-3. Graff is now 21-4 on the season and has won four straight matches by bonus point victories.

Wisconsin recorded yet another bonus point victory at 141 lbs. as redshirt freshman Cole Schmitt defeated redshirt freshman Tommy Chuchard by tech fall (15-0) at 7:00. The win gave the Badgers a 20-3 lead over the Boilermakers and snapped Cole Schmitt’s two match losing streak. Schmitt now has two tech fall wins on the year.

At 149 lbs., No. 5 Kyle Ruschell then faced senior Nick Bertucci in their second meeting of the 2009-10 season. Ruschell added to the Wisconsin lead with a 7-3 decision and 22nd win of the year. Wisconsin then had its largest lead of the night at 23-3.

Sophomore Jesse Hintz then wrestled junior Colton Salazar in his first bout of the 2009-10 season at 157 lbs. Salazar defeated Hintz by tech fall (17-2) at 5:21. Purdue then trailed 23-8.

No. 1 sophomore Andrew Howe recorded the seventh Wisconsin victory of the night, defeating senior Jason Martin by a 12-3 major decision and giving the Badgers a 27-8 lead. The win was Howe’s eighth major decision of the season and extended his record to 24-0.

In the last bout of the night, freshman Brendan Ard took on No. 6 junior Luke Manuel at 174 lbs. Manuel defeated Ard in a close 3-0 decision, ending the night with a 27-11 win for Wisconsin.

The Badgers now head to Champaign-Urbana to take on No. 21 Illinois on Sunday at 1 p.m. (CT).
