MADISON, Wis. -- The second day of the Meyo Invitational in South Bend, Ind., was marked by multiple personal-best marks and another strong showing on the road for the Wisconsin men’s track and field team on Saturday.
Senior James Groce ran his first 400 in a Badger uniform in nearly two years and provided a strong showing with a fifth-place finish in 47.68 seconds. Groce's time ranks as the third-fastest this season in the Big Ten.
Freshman Rob Finnerty established a personal best in the mile, clocking a time of 4:08.80 and finishing in 10th place. Finnerty’s time was more than five seconds faster than his mile at last weekend’s Wisconsin Elite Invitational.
Senior Nate Larkin led the way for the Badgers in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.12 seconds in the prelims but did not finish the final. Adum Gross finished 13th by clocking a time of 8.24 seconds, while Adam Hexum crossed the line in 8.48 seconds.
The Badgers’ 4x400-meter relay team finished sixth out of 21 teams, notching a time of 3:11.75. The relay consisted of Groce, Kyle Jefferson, Quinn Evans and Andrew Milenkovski, with the foursome running four seconds faster than its performance last week in Madison.
UW also had competitors in field events on Friday afternoon, which were made available Saturday upon conclusion of the meet.
Three Badgers notched a height of 6 feet, 7 inches in the high jump. Paul Annear, Pat Nichols and Collin Taylor were three of 10 total athletes to match this height. The UW trio finished 13th, 14th, and 15th in the event.
Mickey DeFilippo represented UW in the pole vault, placing seventh and tying Michigan State’s Logan Lynch with a clearance of 16 feet, 6 3/4 inches.
Victor Dupuy made his season debut by competing in the triple jump and finishing 15th with a leap of 45-3 3/4.
Throwers Jake Fritz and Casey Dehn competed in the shot put. Fritz had a throw of 53-6 1/4 inches, good enough for seventh place. Dehn threw for 48-4 1/2 inches, earning himself a 21st-place finish.
Wisconsin continues its road trip next weekend at the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa, on Friday and Saturday, as well as a portion of the team competing at the Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash., on Saturday.
