MADISON, Wis. -- The Hurricane Invitational continues to be a great place to start the outdoor season for the Wisconsin men’s track and field team.

Last season, Derek Steinbach won the decathlon at the meet while making his collegiate outdoor debut. Another Wisconsin decathlete claimed the title at the Hurricane Invitational on Saturday, as senior Seth Pelock earned 6,427 points to open the 2010 outdoor slate with a win in the decathlon.

Wisconsin claimed the top two spots in the event as sophomore Ian Jansen finished behind Pelock and scored 6,414 points, only 13 markers behind his teammate.

Pelock started the second day of competition on a strong note when he clocked the second-fastest time in the 110-meter hurdles by finishing in 15.39 seconds.

Sophomore David Grzesiak was the next Badger to finish, crossing the line in 16.18 seconds.

Wisconsin really flexed its muscles in the discus by sweeping the top four spots.

Pelock notched a throw of 131 feet, 7 inches and Steinbach followed with a throw of 130-8. Grzesiak was next with a toss of 124-3, and Jansen rounded out the Badgers’ competitors in the event with a 122-foot performance.

The Badgers carried their domination over to the pole vault, an event in which they swept the top four spots yet again.

Jansen had the highest clearance of 15-1. Grzesiak and Steinbach tied for the next highest clearance, a height of 14-1 1/4. Pelock was the final Badger in the event with a height of 13-5 1/4.

Steinbach led the way for the Badgers in the javelin, notching a throw of 187-4. Grzesiak had the fourth-longest throw in the event, a distance of 150-5.

Jansen and Pelock were right behind him with throws of 147-1 and 128, respectively.

The final event in the decathlon, the 1,500 meters, saw Jansen run 4:49.94, the fourth-fastest time among all competitors. Pelock trailed in a time of 5:16.94, but the effort was enough to seal his victory in the decathlon.

Also on Saturday, senior Nate Larkin crossed the line in 14.30 seconds for a third-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles. He also competed in the 100 meters, finishing in 11.05 seconds to claim seventh place.

The Badgers are back on the road next week when they head to Tallahassee, Fla., to compete at the Florida State Relays on March 26-27.
