Badgers trio finishes strong in California Invite decathlon

MADISON, Wis. -- After strong performances on the opening day of competition, Wisconsin’s multi-event athletes proved their success wasn’t a fluke Thursday.

The sophomore trio of David Grzesiak, Derek Steinbach and Ian Jansen all set personal-best scores and swept the third through fifth places for the Wisconsin men’s track and field team at the California Invitational decathlon in Azusa, Calif.

Grzesiak scored a career-best 7,163 points to finish third in the standings. Steinbach followed with a fourth-place finish after posting a lifetime-best score of 6,940.

Jansen concluded the string of consecutive of Badgers in the results, earning 6,627 points to wrap up fifth place.

Grzesiak clocked the second-fastest time in the 110-meter hurdles, finishing in 15.18 seconds. Steinbach was right behind, crossing the line in 15.43 seconds.

Jansen finished the race in a time of 16.27 seconds to notch the eighth-fastest time.

In the shot put, Steinbach had a throw of 127 feet, 2 inches. Jansen followed right behind him with a mark of 126-9, while Grzesiak recorded a toss of 124-6.

It was Jansen’s turn to showcase his talent in the pole vault. He cleared 15-1 to lead all competitors in the event.

Steinbach tied for the second-highest vault, a clearance of 14-5 1/4, while Grzesiak tied for the fifth-highest height, a vault of 13-9 1/4.

Grzesiak closed the day by running the fastest time of any competitor in the 1,500 meters, crossing the line in 4:33.90.

Steinbach trailed in a time of 4:45.60 and Jansen finished in 4:48.86.

Wisconsin continues competition on the West Coast with a number of Badgers participating in the Mt. SAC Relays this weekend in Walnut, Calif.

The three-day meet began on Thursday at Hilmer Lodge Stadium.

The Badgers are also sending a limited number of athletes to take part in the Bryan Clay Invitational at Azusa Pacific on Friday.
