MADISON, Wis. -- Much of the focus for the Wisconsin men’s track and field team was on the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, but that didn’t stop a host of Badgers from having a strong showing elsewhere.

Wisconsin sent a number of athletes to the Jeff Miller Alternative Meet in Whitewater, Wis., on Saturday, and they responded with a number of wins and personal-best finishes.

For starters, the Badgers swept the top two spots in the 400-meter hurdles.

Sophomore Grant Bughman, who ran on the Badgers’ second-place effort in the 4x200-meter relay Friday at the Drake Relays, claimed victory after clocking a personal-best time of 53.27.

Fellow sophomore Pat Plank ran a time of 53.81 to grab runner-up honors in the event.

In the 110-meter hurdles, senior Seth Pelock won with a time of 15.08 seconds, while sophomores Derek Steinbach and Ian Jansen finished in 15.67 and 16.84, respectively.

Junior Andrew Milenkovski won the 400 meters, breaking the tape in 49.19. Senior Barry Gill finished third in the event, crossing the line in 49.55.

Milenkovski also competed in the 200 meters, where he finished second after clocking a time of 22.38.

The Badgers also had strong performances in the pole vault and claimed three of the top five spots in the event.

Sophomore Wes Kavelaris, who competed for the first time this season after battling injury, won the event with a height of 15 feet, 6 1/4 inches.

Steinbach was right behind in second, clearing a personal-best height of 15-0. Jansen finished fourth with a clearance of 14-6.

Junior Pat Nichols won the high jump title with a clearance of 6-6 3/4.

Junior Rob Dehn won the javelin with a throw of 202-3, while Steinbach was runner-up with a throw of 179-9.

In the long jump, freshman Josh Flax finished runner-up with a leap of 22-4 1/2.

Redshirt freshman Paul Annear was right behind in third, notching a leap of 22-1 3/4, and senior Victor Dupuy placed fourth with a jump of 21-3 1/2.

Annear also competed in the triple jump, where he used a personal-best leap of 47-7 to claim the win.

In the shot put, freshman Casey Dehn claimed the top spot with a throw of 53-5.

Senior Rory Linder notched a throw of 160-6 in the discus, good enough for third place.

The Badgers will make a return trip to the state of Iowa next weekend, when they compete in the Musco Twilight Invitational in Iowa City on Saturday, May 1. Big Ten Network is scheduled to air the meet on a tape-delay basis.
