MADISON, Wis. - The Badgers overcame North Dakota, 4-3, in the first game of their doubleheader with an eight-inning victory, Wednesday afternoon at Goodman Diamond. Senior pitcher Letty Olivarez went the distance, pitching eight innings, allowing eight hits, three runs, no walks and throwing three strikeouts. Katie Soderberg went one-for-three, with a walk and two runs scored.

The game went into extra innings as the Sioux and Badgers remained tied 3-3 after the seventh. North Dakota started the eighth with a runner on second but the Badger defense held.

Whitney Massey started on second for the Badgers in the eighth with Karla Powell at the plate. Massey advanced to third on a passed ball, and Powell flew out to right but it was too shallow for Massey to score. Kendall Grimm stepped to the plate and smacked it past the Toni Schutte's glove at shortstop, sending Massey home for the game-winning run.

The Sioux and Badgers scored a run a piece in the first inning.

North Dakota started the game quickly, putting runners on the corners with no outs. The Badgers responded as senior Katie Soderberg tagged out a Sioux runner attempting to steal second, but North Dakota scored first as Lindy Sippola hit an RBI single.

Leading off for the Badgers, senior Katie Soderberg walked, bringing junior Jennifer Krueger to bat, who then sacrificed Soderberg to second. With one out, freshman Molly Spence sliced a single through the hole to left field, putting Badgers on the corners for Shannel Blackshear. Blackshear grounded out, but Soderberg was able to make it home for the Badgers' first run, eluding the tag on a play at the plate.

The Sioux scored two more in the top of the third, taking the lead 3-1, but the Badgers responded in the bottom of inning with a run of their own.

Soderberg led off the third with a double. Krueger then slapped a single, moving Soderberg to third and bringing Spence to bat with no outs. Spence struck out as Krueger stole second, but Soderberg made it home as the Sioux catcher overshot the throw-out attempt. North Dakota's second baseman then overthrew it past home plate, allowing Krueger to advance to third.

The fourth and fifth innings passed scoreless, but the badgers tied it 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth.

With one out, Grimm doubled to left and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Olivarez then helped her own cause with an RBI single, evening the score at 3-3.
