MADISON, Wis. -- The distance medley relay has long been a strong event for the Wisconsin men’s track and field team.
The Badgers flexed some muscle and showed some depth in the event Saturday, with UW’s entries sweeping the top two spots to close out the Florida Relays in Gainesville, Fla.
Wisconsin’s squad of juniors Luke Rucks, Quinn Evans, Zach Beth and senior Ryan Gasper clocked a time of 9:46.40 to take the title in the DMR, and the Badgers’ “B” squad wasn’t far behind.
The second group, which included freshman Drew Shields, sophomore Grant Bughman and redshirt freshman Rob Finnerty, grabbed a runner-up finish in 9:49.94.
The DMR was one of several relays the Badgers competed in Saturday.
Wisconsin’s team of junior Chas DeMers, sophomore Kyle Jefferson, freshman Gavin Robertson and senior James Groce crossed the line in 1:23.74 to finish fourth in the 4x200-meter relay.
The ‘C’ team in the event consisted of senior Nate Larkin and sophomores Adum Gross, Adam Hexum and Temi Ogunbodede. The relay placed 18th after finishing in 1:30.86.
Senior Nate Larkin and sophomores Adum Gross, Adam Hexum and Temi Ogunbodede also competed in the 4x100-meter shuttle hurdle relay and finished in 57.99 seconds to wrap up third place.
The Badgers’ team of Evans, Bughman, sophomore Pat Plank and junior Andrew Milenkovski finished sixth in the 1,600-meter sprint medley relay in a time of 3:24.97.
DeMers, Jefferson, Groce and Larkin placed 18th in the 4x100-meter relay, finishing the race in a time of 41.22 seconds.
In the field events, junior Robert Dehn finished seventh in the javelin with a throw of 212 feet, 4 inches.
His brother, freshman Casey Dehn, placed ninth in the shot put with an outdoor personal-best throw of 55-1 1/4. He was followed by junior Jake Fritz, who notched a throw of 54-1 1/2 to finish tied for 10th place.
Collin Taylor finished ninth in the high jump, as he cleared 6-10 3/4 for the second-consecutive week. Taylor was followed by senior Pat Nichols, who earned 12th place with a jump of 6-8 3/4 to match his outdoor personal best.
After spending the past two weekends in Florida, the Badgers will take a week off until April 14-15, when the team sends its multi-event athletes to Azusa, Calif., to compete at the Bryan Clay Invitational.
The Badgers will also send competitors to Walnut, Calif., to compete in the Mt. SAC Relays on April 15-17.
