MADISON, Wis. -- Six different Badgers drove in a run and seven different Badgers scored a run, while in the circle, senior Letty Olivarez and freshman Meghan Mcintosh combined for five scoreless innings as Wisconsin finished off a two-game sweep of Indiana with an, 8-0, shutout win in five innings on Sunday afternoon at Goodman Diamond.
It was Wisconsin’s third shutout of the season and the second in Big Ten play as the Badgers also blanked Purdue, 3-0, on April 17.
The Badgers have now won seven straight home games, tying for the second longest streak in school history. The Badgers won nine straight at Goodman Diamond in 2005 from April 18 to May 20.
The first two innings passed without a score, but the Badgers put up three runs in the third, two in the fourth and the final three in the fifth inning.
A strong defensive showing in the third inning kept the game scoreless for UW.
With one out and a runner on second, Jennifer Glueckert singled up the middle but junior Jennifer Krueger fielded the ball and threw home, nailing Breanna Saucedo at the plate. A follow-up single by Amanda Wagner put runners on second and third with two outs.
McIntosh came on in relief of Olivarez, but a passed ball moved the runners to second and third. McIntosh got out of the jam though as she induced a grounder. The ball deflected off her, but senior Katie Soderberg fielded the deflection and threw on to first to end the inning.
Junior Ashley Hanewich led off the third inning with a double to center field. With one out, she moved to third on a groundout by Krueger and then scored the first run on a passed ball while freshman Molly Spence was batting. Spence ended up drawing a walk, and then moved to second on a single by freshman Shannel Blackshear. The bases became loaded as freshman Whitney Massey singled up the middle.
With the bases full, the Badgers scratched across two runs without putting a ball in play. Olivarez drew a walk to bring home Spence, and junior Dana Rasmussen was hit by a 0-2 pitch to bring home Blackshear.
Wisconsin added to its total in the next inning to take a 5-0 lead.
Hanewich again led off the inning, drawing a walk this time. Freshman Abby Gregory came on to pinch run for Hanewich and moved to second on a sacrifice by Soderberg. Krueger stepped in next and laced a triple over the drawn-in outfield to bring home Gregory. Spence then picked up her team-leading 34th RBI of the year as she grounded out to second base, allowing Krueger to score.
A pair of home runs in the fifth inning gave Wisconsin its seventh win in nine games.
Freshman Whitney Massey led things off with a solo home run to center field, her third of the season. Olivarez then drew her second walk of the game and was replaced by pinch runner, freshman Kelsey Horton. After two outs, Hanewich stepped in and crushed the first pitch over the wall in left field for her fourth homer of the season.
Olivarez got the first eight outs for Wisconsin, giving up just four hits and no runs, while striking out two. McIntosh come on in relief and was spotless as she picked up her sixth win of the season. McIntosh got the final seven outs without giving up a hit, striking out one in the process.
Hanewich finished the day 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Blackshear and Massey each added a pair of hits.
The Badgers next take to the road, playing a two-game series at Northwestern on May 8-9. Both games are set for 1 p.m. (CT) start times.
