MADISON, Wis. -- Molly Spence capped off her tremendous freshman season by being named 2010 Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I All-Region, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association announced on Wednesday. Spence was named to the second team in the Great Lakes Region.
With the award, Spence becomes the first freshman position player in school history to be named to an All-Region team. She joins Andrea Kirchberg, who was named first team All-Mideast as a pitcher in 2000, as the only freshmen to earn All-Region honors in Wisconsin history.
The last Badger to be named All-Region was Katie Hnatyk, who was named second team All-Mideast in 2007.
Spence led the Badgers offense in several offensive categories during the 2010 season, including batting average, runs, hits, doubles, home runs, RBI, total bases, slugging percentage and on-base percentage.
The Wilmette, Ill., native also set numerous school records throughout the season.
Her 41 RBI set a new single-season record at Wisconsin, and she tied the mark for most multi-RBI games in one year with 11.
On April 21 against South Dakota, Spence set the school's single-game record by recording seven RBI thanks to a grand slam, a two-run triple and an RBI single.
Her .347 batting average for the season is the highest ever for a freshman, as was her .424 on-base percentage, .600 slugging percentage, 1.024 OPS (on-base plus slugging), 34 runs scored and 90 total bases. In addition, Spence tied the freshman record with 10 stolen bases.
