
Badgers place well in Wisconsin State Open

Madison, Wis. - Wisconsin was well-represented among the leaders at the recently completed Wisconsin State Open Aug. 23-25 at The Legend of Bristlecone in Hartland, Wis.
Former Badger Dan Woltman lost in a playoff to winner Eddie Terasa after completing the 72-hole tournament with a 68-67-69-73—277. Woltman, who graduated in 2009, was the champion in 2007 and 2009. The course played to a par 71 and measured just over 7,000 yards.
Also among the top 15 finishers was Ryan Helminen, the 2008 winner, who tied for seventh with 70-70-70-72—282. Tying for ninth with a 283 were former Badgers Jeff Kaiser (72-72-67-72) and Garrett Jones(70-69-71-73). Tyler Obermueller tied for 13th with 71-70-71-72—284.
UW’s coaching staff also played with assistant coach Brian Brodell tying for 26th with 74-67-77-72—290. Head Coach Jim Schuman, who won the event in 1996 and 1999, tied for 46th with 73-74-68-83—297.
Current Badgers that participated as amateurs included sophomore Mike Sorenson of Hartland, Wis., tying for 22nd with 70-72-76-71—289. Sophomore Thomas Welk of Bismarck, N.D., tied for 60th with a 74-72-75-81—302. Sophomore Sam Frank from Oconomowoc, Wis., shot a 163 and did not make the 36-hole cut. Spring graduate Jordan Elsen tied for 54th with 70-72-78-80--300.
The win by Teresa, his third title, stopped a string of UW champions over the past eight years. Other past UW champions include Ben Walter (1994, 1997, 2005), Jim Schuman (1996 and 1999), Jon Turcott (2003, 2006), Mario Tiziani (2002), David Roesch (2004), Ryan Helminen (2008), and Dan Woltman (2007, 2009).
