BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Led by sophomore Monica Lam-Feist (Surrey, B.C.), the Wisconsin women's soccer team defeated Indiana in overtime, 1-0, at Armstrong Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Fast Facts | • Lam-Feist notched the game-winner | • Badgers are currently riding a six-game shutout streak | • Dalton has not given up a goal in 471 minutes | |
The Badgers' (4-3-3, 1-0-1 Big Ten) shutout victory advances the team's shutout streak to six games, and Wisconsin senior goalkeeper Michele Dalton's (Mt. Prospect, Ill.) to five straight.
"The shutout was definitely a group effort," Wisconsin head coach Paula Wilkins said.
"Indiana had two dangerous players up front and we were able to put good pressure on them and prevent them from scoring. Jo (Joana Bielefeld) and Erin (Jacobsen) helped shut down the midfield by clogging up the middle and the defense did a great job of denying Indiana's shots."
In the first half, the Hoosiers (4-6-1, 0-2-0 Big Ten) led the shot tally with six to Wisconsin's four. However, Wisconsin fired eight shots (three on goal) in the second half while Indiana recorded four. In the contest, the Badgers outshot the Hoosiers, 13-10.
After 90 minutes of scoreless play, the Badgers played in extra minutes for the fourth time this season. However, the overtime period did not last long.
Just over a minute into extra play, junior Lauren Cochlin (Owatonna, Minn.) crossed the ball to Lam-Feist. The sophomore ripped a shot in the 91st minute to tally her first goal of the season and the second of her career.
Cochlin's assist marks her sixth career point. Sophomore Alev Kelter (Eagle River, Alaska) was credited with the secondary assist, her first of the season.
"I think it's a really good thing anytime you can get a win on the road, especially in Big Ten play," Wilkins said. "I tell our players that's why we have such a tough non-conference schedule to prepare for these tough Big Ten games.
"I think that every environment poses a challenge and to not give up a goal and get a win this weekend gives us confidence heading into the rest of the season."
Dalton stopped all five of the Hoosiers' shots on goal, and Indiana goalkeeper Shannon Flower had four saves in over 91 minutes of play.
Wisconsin's six-game shutout streak is the program's longest since the 1985 squad put together a nine-game shutout streak. The Badgers also posted six straight shutouts in 1990 and twice in 1991.
The Badgers travel to Minnesota on Thursday to wrap up their five-game road stretch. Wisconsin concludes the weekend on Sunday as it hosts Iowa in its Big Ten home opener at the McClimon Complex.
